El Tunco El Salvador

Our time at Casa Bonita ( Casa Bonita - El Tunco Casa Bonita - El Tunco ) in the beautiful Surf Community of El Tunco El Salvador

Surfer in El TuncoR: Our time in El Salvador means we have to at least mention pupusas, it’s their national dish. They’re nothing to look at, hence the lack of photos. Pupusas are a fresh corn tortilla with cheese added into the corn dough, fried up and chowed down.  They are as delicious as they are basic.  They we so good, perfect even, they had given me an epiphany.

R:  So many creatives are trying to reinvent a genre or style without perfecting it first.  It’s only after you’ve cooked a lifetime of pupusas’ reinventing would work. I would welcome an idea to reinvent them, but the old cooks don’t because there is no need, they’re perfect.

R: To the Left Above is the Thekla Beach Club ( Thekla Beach Club Thekla Beach Club)best Limonadas on the planet.  We had worried that our order had laid forgotten. Ee looked over to get the barkeeps attention and there her was reaming lemons into glasses. “When life gives you lemons, you ream the F/ outta’em,” – old El Salvadoran saying.

R: I was a little worried at first about the casa. The images of it on Tripadvisor were pretty lean. we heard that El Sal was a poor country so we assumed it was going to be more than a shack but not by much. My expectations, blown apart when we arrived. Nothing has lead me to believe that Casa Bonita was a three story open concept ‘tree-house’. This was luxury, papusa (the name we offered the resident cat) kept our worries at bay.

dog in El TuncoR: We notice a unique cultural difference between us Canadian and the people of El Salvador.  We were witness to a couple of wild dogs picking on another in the streets.  If that happened here in Canada people would yell at the dogs, “HEY, STOP THAT!” about scare the animals.  In El Sal, everyone around the dogs, started sushin “shhh shhhh shhh”. The dogs settled down, and we more pleasant to each other.

R: El Salvador has perfected the colour blue, and all the tones of blue.

R: A friend of ours, Andrew (Tip Toe Tours Veg Head Drew Veg Head Drew)reached out to us while we were there to check out a few spots. We were on limited time. We decided on the surf beach at “K59” and Karlo, had a van full of surfers ready to go the next day. We tagged along and got some of our favorite surfing in El Salvador shots.

K: I’d go as far as saying I got some of my favourite shots of the trip that morning.

R: Also some good coffee, at 50 cents a cup too!

R: We met up with Geo and Joyce of Artistique Fotografia ( Artistique Fotografia width= Artistique Fotografia width= ) fellow wedding photographers. They spoke more english then we did spanish, but we could still easily work with each other, we did up a cute little session of them while there. There is more on our wedding site.

K: I was skeptical about meeting at first. A couple from a foreign country, while knowing very little about them. As it turns out, Geo and Joyce were super warm and open individuals. They wanted nothing more than to show us as much of the area as possible in the short time we had. I’m so grateful to them for those incredible memories.

R: The rest of El Salvador was as warm and open as them. El Salvador has a tarnished reputation, the people are different than what the we’re told.

R: Forget about France, El Salvador is the country of romance and love. We couldn’t get a coffee in the mountains without getting to witness and engagement. Ryan was in the process of setting up portait when this gentleman did the one knee salute at El Mirador de la Giralda (    ) See Joyce and Kate look upon them, as Geo and Ryan shoot the engagement.

R: Pastries too.  The desserts and pastries pair with the espresso for that evening. We have yet been to france. France is going to have a rough time beating that old german in delicatessens. If you can pull him away from his guitar.

K: He’s not German

R: What?

K: Yeah, he’s been to Germany and various other countries, but he was born in El Salvador! The guy had a ton of great stories, and was very interested in chatting with us. K: We also got to experience how small the world was one night in El Tunco. We had wandered down the road to buy some incredible pupusas. There was another couple from Switzerland and we got to chatting.  It turns out, a month prior, they had been in our home town. Eating at one of our favourite pubs, and referred to the bartender by name. Incredible!
